The North Carolina State Capitol Police force headquartered in downtown Raleigh is charged with providing a safe and secure environment for employees and visitors to the State Government Complex and other state-owned properties. To recognize the hard work and dedication of these officers, Governor Roy Cooper declared December 4 – 11, 2022, as State Capitol Police Officers’ Week in North Carolina.
These men and women perform critical work every day, from keeping employees and visitors at state-owned properties safe and secure, to investigating crimes within their jurisdiction. The Dispatch Center monitors emergency alarms at state-owned facilities 24 hours a day, seven days a week, directing emergency responders as needed. State Capitol Police officers work with various groups during special events and gatherings in downtown Raleigh to protect the safety of people and state property. For more than 50 years the State Capitol Police agency has provided dedicated service to the people of North Carolina.
“As the third largest state capitol police department in the United States, we are charged with providing a safe and secure environment for employees and visitors to the State Government Complex and other state-owned properties,” said Chief Rodger “Chip” Hawley. “I am extremely proud of the work that the men and women of our agency perform for the citizens of North Carolina each and every day.”
Chief Hawley expressed that he wants the agency to be a resource to everyone in North Carolina in a recent episode of the Safety Scoop podcast. Check out the episode for more details on the roles and professional accomplishments of his team.
The State Capitol Police force currently has 145 personnel.
