Col. William J. Grey

William “Bill” Grey was born in Orlando, Fla., and grew up in the Winston-Salem area. He graduated from Guilford College with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1979 – 1989.

Col. Grey began his Highway Patrol career in 1991. He served as Trooper, Sergeant and First Sergeant with the Criminal Interdiction team. He was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to Special Operations in 2007.  In 2009, he was promoted to Captain at the Training Academy and in 2011 to Major, overseeing the Support Services Section. In 2013 he served as Chief of State Capitol Police and on March 28, 2013, he was promoted to the rank of Colonel, becoming the 26th commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
