Six agencies doing significant work to help people recovering from Hurricane Florence will receive grants totaling $2 million to further fund their relief efforts. North Carolina Emergency Management, a division of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, is awarding the grants using funds provided by the General Assembly in the Hurricane Florence Disaster Relief Act.
“There are still many people struggling to recover from Hurricane Florence who need help,” said Governor Roy Cooper. ”These funds will help more people get their homes repaired or rebuilt.”
“The agencies receiving these funds are among the most involved and engaged in Hurricane Florence recovery work,” said North Carolina Emergency Management Director Mike Sprayberry. “We look forward to their continued good work using these additional funds.”
The grants will go to these agencies in the following amounts:
- North Carolina Baptists on Mission $500,000
- Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry $400,000
- Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders Inc. $182,000
- Rebuilding Together of the Triangle $168,000
- United Way of Coastal Carolina $400,000
- Legal Aid of North Carolina Inc. $350,000
Voluntary agencies that provide shelter, housing repairs and other emergency and disaster recovery services were eligible to apply for grant awards of up to $500,000. The applications were reviewed and scored by a multidisciplinary team using scoring criteria that were made available at the time of application.
These grants add to the $1.9 billion in state and federal funds already on the ground for Hurricane Florence relief in North Carolina.
