On Sunday, June 11, at approximately 12:54 a.m., the State Highway Patrol responded to call for officer assistance from Kenly Police Department in Johnston County.  Police were initially called to respond to shots fired in the area of 504 South Wilson St. Upon arrival, officers determined that an individual had become barricaded at a residence.

After arriving on the scene, three State Highway Patrol members encountered a male that emerged from the residence of 504 South Wilson St. producing a firearm.  The order to drop the firearm was ignored and members fired at the armed individual, striking him several times.

Medical attention was quickly administered, and the suspect was transported to Wake Med with serious injuries.  Authorities have identified Joshua Taylor Haynes, 34, of Kenley, NC as the individual shot during the encounter.  Troopers Luke S. Frederick, Joseph F. Deal II, and Corey M. Wilson are identified as the involved State Highway Patrol members.

In accordance with agency protocol in any trooper-involved shooting, the involved members have been placed on administrative duty.  The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is conducting an independent investigation of the incident.  Any further inquiries into this incident should be directed to the SBI due to their separate ongoing investigation.

No law enforcement officers were injured during this incident.
