RALEIGH – North Carolina Emergency Management deployed its Joint Mobile Operations Center today to Windsor at the request of Bertie County officials. The expandable 18-wheeler provides mobile workspace and communications capabilities, and can be used in a variety of ways.
In Windsor, it will temporarily replace the Bertie County Agricultural Extension office, which housed seven employees and also serves as the county’s disaster recovery center. That office was flooded last week after 17 inches of rain forced the Cashie River out of its banks and into many downtown Windsor homes and businesses.
“This mobile operations center is one of many resources available from the state to help counties respond and recover from emergencies and disasters,” said NC Emergency Management Director Mike Sprayberry. “We will continue to monitor the situation and stand ready to help northeastern North Carolina recover from this record flooding.”
Damage assessment teams will deploy in Bertie, Chowan, Perquimans and Currituck counties on Monday to begin examining damage to homes and businesses so that the recovery process can begin.
Other state resources provided in the past week have included: three swift water rescue teams that rescued 138 people from floodwater; supplies of bottled water; and a large mobile storage container to store files and records from flooded Bertie County offices.
