State Capitol Police, the State Bureau of Investigation and the Raleigh Police Department are looking for two suspects in the defacement of a monument on the grounds of the State Capitol early Tuesday morning.
Shortly after 3 a.m., the Raleigh Police Department was notified that the Confederate Women’s Monument had just been vandalized. When officers from the State Capitol Police arrived on the scene at 3:30 a.m., the paint was still wet.
The City-County Bureau of Investigation is processing evidence found near the scene, and State Capitol Police officers are reviewing video from several security cameras.
“It’s just a matter of time before the suspects are identified,” said State Capitol Police Maj. Anthony Moss. “Vandalism of state property of any kind will not be tolerated.”
The State Capitol Police has primary jurisdiction in this case because the monument is located within the state government complex.
Outside of Raleigh, the State Bureau of Investigation has primary jurisdiction involving the destruction of state property. For city or county-owned property, the resources of the State Bureau of Investigation will be offered to local authorities to identify those responsible.
Anyone with information on the two suspects may call (919) 733-3333.
