As the Christmas and New Year’s Holiday season approaches, the State Highway Patrol is encouraging motorists to keep safety in mind while traveling to their various destinations. As the number of vehicles increase on the state’s roadways, so does the potential for vehicle collisions.

Judge Reuben Young will serve in an interim capacity as the Chief Deputy Secretary of the Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice (ACJJ), Secretary Erik A. Hooks announced today. Judge Young will fill the position within the Department of Public Safety formerly held by David Guice.

Today, Governor Cooper announced that residents of Cumberland, Edgecombe, Robeson and Wayne counties can now call 2-1-1 to schedule an appointment at a Hurricane Matthew Housing Application Center.

The State Highway Patrol’s aviation unit assisted with the search of a missing Surry County man on Wednesday, December 13.  Local authorities had issued a Silver Alert for Robert Eugene Abeyta, 73, of Pinnacle, NC who had walked away from his residence around 10 a.m.

Inmate Gerard Altman (#1131252) died Monday at Lumberton Correctional Institution after an apparent suicide. He was found unresponsive in the inmate dormitory at about 3:38 a.m.

The State Highway Patrol proudly welcomed 17 new troopers at a graduation ceremony for the 143rd Basic Highway Patrol School. The celebration ended 15 weeks of extensive academic and physical training.
