The North Carolina Air National Guard promoted Sanford resident Clarence Ervin to the rank of brigadier general becoming the first African American general officer in the N.C. Air Guard's 67-year history.

State Highway Patrol Major Glenn M. McNeill Jr., was one of 230 law enforcement officers who graduated today from the FBI National Academy Program at Quantico, Va. McNeill, who is a 22-year veteran, oversees the State Highway Patrol’s Training Academy in Garner.
