With Power Restored, State of Emergency Lifted

RALEIGH
Feb 1, 2016

Governor McCrory on Friday lifted the State of Emergency that was declared in preparation for the winter storm. While the storm clouds left North Carolina last weekend, impacts from the season’s first snow and ice storm lingered into the week prompting state officials to leave the emergency order in place to facilitate recovery efforts.

Snow removalUtility workers and road crews worked continuously for days to restore power and clear roads across the state. By Monday, most of the power had been restored, but many school systems again cancelled classes due to icy roads.

“The State of Emergency is a necessary tool we use routinely during disasters to expedite storm response and recovery,” said Emergency Management Director Mike Sprayberry.

State emergency management officials reported there were 472,000 power outages at some point during the storm. Duke Energy had more than 7,000 workers restoring power many of those from other states who were brought in to help.

Governor McCrory declared a State of Emergency Wednesday, January 20 in anticipation of the winter storm. The truck weight and hours of service restriction waivers that also were signed that day, will remain in effect through the week.  While power and road conditions in North Carolina have returned to normal, heavy truck traffic continues through the state to replenish essential commodities and remove debris in several states impacted by last week’s record-breaking storm.
