Continuing Education
Information for Licensees
All licensees, regardless of license type, are required to complete 12 hours of continuing education (CE) during each 2-year license period. Registrants, such as armed or unarmed security guards, are not required to complete continuing education. The continuing education requirement cannot be waived or deferred under any circumstance. A maximum of six hours of CE may be obtained from online, on-demand courses. There is no limit to the number of hours that may be obtained from in-person instruction or live, virtual instruction.
Continuing education may be obtained several ways:
- Attend a Board-approved CE course
- Attend a Board meeting (two hours of CE, with a maximum of eight hours per license period)
- Attend Board-provided industry training (four hours of CE, usually offered following the April and October Board meetings)
- Attend a conference, seminar, or training event provided by a Board-approved organization
- Attend a professionally relevant conference, seminar, or training event and obtain one-time approval from the Director for CE credit
- Complete qualifying higher education classes (see administrative rule 14B NCAC 16 .1203(f))
Licensees are to maintain their training records and upload CE certificates and the Licensee’s Statement of Continuing Education form with their license renewal application.
